Spiritual Authority & Covering: Why Order Matters in the Kingdom

In a culture that celebrates independence and self-direction, the idea of spiritual authority and covering can feel uncomfortable — even unnecessary.

Many people want a relationship with God…

But without accountability.
Without correction.
Without structure.

However, Scripture reveals something important:

God operates through order.

And understanding spiritual authority is essential for walking in alignment, protection, and growth.

God Is a God of Order

God does not function in chaos or disorder.

Everything He establishes has structure, purpose, and alignment.

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace as in all the churches of the saints.” — 1 Corinthians 14:33 (KJV)

Spiritual authority is not about control.

It is about order that produces peace, clarity, and direction.

What Is Spiritual Covering?

Spiritual covering refers to being under godly leadership and accountability.

It is a position of humility where you are:

  • teachable

  • accountable

  • guided

This can look like:

  • a pastor

  • a spiritual mentor

  • a leader within your church community

Covering provides:

  • guidance

  • correction

  • protection

Why Covering Matters

Many people underestimate the importance of being spiritually covered.

But outside of proper alignment, it becomes easier to:

  • rely on your own understanding

  • misinterpret God’s direction

  • operate without accountability

This connects directly to discerning God’s voice which I wrote about in a previous blog post:

How to Discern the Voice of God

Because without covering, it becomes easier to mistake your own voice for God’s.

Submission to Authority Reflects Submission to God

How you respond to spiritual authority often reflects how you respond to God.

“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they must give account…” — Hebrews 13:17 (KJV)

This does not mean blind obedience.

It means:

  • honoring leadership

  • remaining teachable

  • receiving correction with humility

This builds directly on living a submitted life which you can read more about below:

The Power of A Submitted Life: Surrendering Fully to God’s Will

Because submission is not selective — it is a posture.

Guarding Your Heart While Under Authority

Being under authority does not mean ignoring discernment.

It is important to:

  • stay rooted in the Word

  • maintain personal relationship with God

  • test what you receive

At the same time, you must guard your heart against:

  • offense

  • pride

  • rebellion

If left unchecked, these can lead to disconnection and misalignment.

Because the enemy often works through offense to break alignment.

The Danger of Operating Without Covering

When people reject spiritual authority entirely, they may:

  • become self-led instead of God-led

  • resist correction

  • isolate themselves

This can slow growth and open the door to unnecessary struggles.

God designed community and leadership for a reason.

Not to restrict you — but to protect and guide you.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Authority

It’s important to understand the difference.

Healthy authority:

  • aligns with Scripture

  • points you toward God, not themselves

  • corrects with wisdom and love

  • encourages growth and accountability

Unhealthy authority:

  • manipulates or controls

  • contradicts the Word

  • discourages personal relationship with God

Discernment is key.

Godly authority will never lead you away from truth.

What Walking Under Covering Looks Like

Practically, this means:

1. Staying connected to a local church or community
Avoid isolation.

2. Being open to correction
Growth requires humility.

3. Seeking wise counsel
Don’t make every decision alone.

4. Remaining grounded in Scripture
The Word is your ultimate standard.

5. Honoring leadership with the right heart posture
Not out of fear — but out of alignment.

Encouragement for This Season

If God is leading you to grow in this area, be encouraged:

Spiritual authority is not meant to limit you.

It is meant to:

  • strengthen you

  • guide you

  • protect you

You don’t have to navigate your walk with God alone.

And when you align yourself with godly order, you position yourself for greater clarity, growth, and stability.

Because in the Kingdom, order is not restriction — it is protection.
